preparation process of salve/ointment/balm/rub/infusion treatments

All of our salves, balms, ointments and rubs are prepared in the herbsfromhome kitchen from our own recipes and methods from clean fresh ingredients. The preparations are custom made, recipes and decisions for the herb[s] and carrier[s] are ours.  If you are familiar with herb[s] please specify if you would like the preparations made with your selection.

It seemed senseless to add harmful ingredients to herbs, because that is the very reason why we first began to make the natural herbal skin products. We became disenchanted with 'quick fix' products years ago and their side affects. As skin ‘takes’ in whatever is applied to it and the ingredients of products were unknowns. There are no unknown fillers in our preparations. A herbal treatment of skin problems needs no caustic additives. It defeats the purpose.

herbsfromhome specializes in a broad range of herbal soothing and healing skin treatments in the form of;

  • ointments, salves, balms and rubs.
    • for daily treatment or long term healing and/or pain relief.
  • All are hand prepared, researched carefully and used ourselves and contain only herb[s] and carrier[s] and natural scent.
  • There are no added artificial dyes, fillers, harsh chemicals, harmful preservative or narcotics.
  • Aromatherapy of Vanilla bean has been added to our ointments, salves, rubs and balms, resulting in a deliciously complex scent! [If you would like to try a spice, just let us know--it is free of charge!, [if in stock]
  • natural preservatives including Vit. E can be added to any product on request, [some already contain Vit E.]
  • most rubs and ointments contain benzoin. It can be left out of preparation on request.
  • Rubs are a concentration of herbs to bring relief to immediate or continuous pain.
  • Ointment, Balms, Infusions and salves are used for skin conditions.

  •  A single herb from our available selection can be added to the Specialty preparations free of charge [exceptions such as; Goldenseal root, Balm of Gilead buds and Bloodroot] Preparations of one herb [only] is our Classic selection.

It is important to use very little. [unless otherwise specified] The benefits are there --- without loading the delicate skin with unwanted and un-needed layers. What is applied the skin ----goes into the skin.
Benzoin tincture isadded to rubs and most ointments but not salves [unless specified] It is a preservative and may be of benefit to some skin ailments. It is written in the contents if it is part of the preparation. [but on request it can be left out or added]
There will be variations in texture and color but that in no way detracts from the benefits that the salve gives to the skin. Some of the ointments and rubs are not pretty and the pleasant scent is lacking but they produce extraordinary results if they are matched with the problem correctly.
We can prepare any herbal salves or ointments. Let us know your preference or perhaps we can help with your decision. There is a list of herbs in stock and others can be purchased. Let us know your choice or perhaps we can make suggestions.

    If you chose to;

    • select your own combination of herbs
    •  and we will custom prepare the ointment,
      •  we have to know what it is for, in a general way
    •  as all are the same price per oz
      • you can chose any one ointment in the prefered size and order it,
      • just let us know

we do not use the 'simplers' method of preparing our products. We use our own method and recipe and they are effective.
We can also prepare a 'solar' product. The sun will use its heat to extract the herb properties, but it will take longer.
You may also feel there are too many herbs in the preparation and they counteract each other. This is not so. Each herb adds it's own contribution and is needed to make the rub work. The first herbs listed in each, ointment, balm, rub or infusion are selected for their unique properties to benefit the known problem, then there are secondary herbs selected to add, for example; calmness, fragrance, bring the preparation together, bring certain herbs to their full potential, penetration, antiseptic, astringent and/or other benefits. The preparation process is complicated and time consuming but the benefits are enormous.
    • Until the body can begin make use of the herbal rub, there may be dreams [no nightmares] please note; this may be considered the only side-affect, but if you seriously wish to ease the pain it is a minor one. These rubs are used daily by the family; that is why they have been prepared.
      • it varies with the person.
      • some are more susceptible than others.
      • sometimes lasting only the first two weeks or so...
        • if too much area is covered at one time
        • or the two rubs [or other herbal preparations] used in combination, the body will be confused and it will defeat the purpose
    • The rub must match the problem, we have tried to give a limited detail of the particular rub use.

A personalized rub can be prepared. The herbs used in preparation can be adjusted to suit the circumstances for no added price. Check the individual herb on the herb page. Each herb selection has information on that particular herb and either/or ointment, salve and rubs, infusion, tincture; that may be used in preparation. organic healing oils can be added you are welcome to suggest your choice and add a small percentage will added free of charge.

    • Eucalyptus leaves have been added to the base rub preparation to give a more pleasing scent --- as well as giving medicinal benefits.
    • for a herb not in stock; extra time will be added to delivery
    • check in the bargain bin for specials

      international customers; information

      • Cocoa butter can be used as the carrier or as a blend free of charge but you have to let us know.
      • Leaf lard will be used as the[carrier of the herb] unless otherwise specified
      • we prefer to not use olive oil [virgin, extra virgin [ we consider it a heavy oil and scent, but will use it on request as it is a good barrier oil]
        •  Eucaylytus rub/ointment is prepared with Olive oil as it needs a good heavy oil and already has a strong scent.

      • The beeswax has not been processed only filtered [strained] and we do that ourselves. A scant amount of honey was left in the filtering process  and as honey helps tone the skin it is an added bonus. We purchase the desert honey from the same beekeeper that supplies us with the wax. Our salves have wax unless specified. In the preparation we will leave it out if not wanted. Wax makes the salve easier to apply--not so messy--in other words user friendly. We feel wax does not change the benefit.
      • The salves, ointment and rubs; are best applied after washing, when the skin is warm and moist; but can be used anytime.
      • A little goes a long way, so use a light touch and rub in thoroughly.  More is not better--use less--just thin film!  [unless specified]
      • Don't give up--herb[s] preparations are not drug company formula. Herbal treatments can be slow and steady healing or a daily application for many months or even years, depending on the problem, how long it has been there and if there are other mitigating factors, such as general ill health.
      • Made for external use only.
      • Drink lots of water, just water, not Gatorade, soda pop, or other.
      • Losing weight is easy, it is the stopping eating that is hard.
      • Be positive!

We strongly suggested that they not be combined in use with over-the-counter, prescription drugs or other herbal treatments. Three days or more, should clear the skin and be ready for the treatment.

This is information on general use and there are exceptions to any of these.

    • Rubs are used specifically to penetrate below the skin, are multiple herb combinations, with/and/or/ in place of liniments, such as for arthritis, fibromyalgia and related conditions,
    •  Salve is excellent as a general skin care or specific use. Not necessarily localized treatments.
      •  An example is a daily skin softener and smoother or for a rash or anti-itch application.
    • Ointments can be applied for specific topical treatment or for general use.
    • general suggestions for use of ointment, salve, balm or rub or balms will be sent with the ordered preparation.
  • cold infusion: herbs in oil with cold infusion and choice of oil, It will take at least a month but would be better at 6 weeks.
  •  solar: by the sun depending on the weather, 2 weeks to a month, with choice of oils or butters.
  • warm infusion: prepared by heating the oil and/or butters, it will take approximately 3 days at the least possible temperature. choice can be made of oils or butters. [using a higher temprature will be faster]
  • Preparing medicinal salves, ointments and rubs; Select the herbs carefully for quality. Check history of each herb before combining. Depending on the problem, there are certain herbs used for the skin; to restore, to penetrate, rebuild, for pain, drawing power, power to draw into itself, used to bring the other herbs together, scent, tighten, soothe, rejuvenate, to name a few powers of a given herb or combinations. Check for portion size and method of preparation. For example; leaves, roots and bark each differ in method for extraction of herb properties, selection and percentage, heat, time frame, portion size, carrier, natural preservation, emollient[s] and scent.
